As part of our commitment to community engagement, earlier this year, we hosted a series of successful ‘Your Wirral, Your Say’ events to provide you with the opportunity to give your views on Birkenhead town centre as it is now, and importantly how you’d like to see it in the future.
We can now share our findings and how they have informed our progress into masterplanning the development of Birkenhead.
Delivered presentations to council elected members.
Organised pop-up events in Birkenhead town centre, and for market traders.
Consulted with young people at The Hive Wirral Youth Zone.
Engaged with Wirral Chamber of Commerce and Wirral Metropolitan College.
Visited and engaged the Multi-Cultural Association.
We had a great response to the first consultation and we wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who took the time over the Summer to share their thoughts and ideas.
All of the feedback received has been brought together in our full report, here, below are a selection of your views from stage one consultation:
The market remains an important feature of the town BUT there is a need to improve its appeal and relationship with other parts of the town centre.
Local people are passionate about the future (of Birkenhead) and want to change the town’s poor public perception.
There is support for regeneration in the town centre and opportunities for job creation, business relocation and new development proposals.
Clear need for an increase in the range of uses and operators in the town centre, including more restaurants and leisure uses to provide activity after 6pm.
Clearly potential for more accessible council offices and public services (in Birkenhead).
Birkenhead has good strong bus and rail connections during the day but these could be improved in the evening – especially routes to/from Liverpool.
Your feedback has been invaluable in informing us to develop plans for the first phases of development that help shape a brighter future for Birkenhead.
This has allowed us to move forward with our mission to transform spaces that improve homes, lives and communities across the Wirral.
Potential to adapt the existing main shopping area to reduce the number of vacant units/buildings.
Broaden uses within the retail core such as improvements to the leisure, food and drink offer to enhance the vitality of the town centre in the evening.
Better integrate Birkenhead Market with the main shopping area of the town centre.
Regeneration activity to improve job opportunities for people from all communities on the Wirral.
Explore options for a new public service hub.
Improve public spaces close to the retail core, including flexible outdoor space for live activities.
Delivery of improvements to existing road, rail and bus infrastructure to make sure that it stands the test of time.
Explore opportunities to upgrade pedestrian and cycle connections in the town centre to improve accessibility.
Deliver high-quality development that provides opportunity for technological advancements.
We have used your thoughts and ideas to shape this emerging masterplan now you can have your say on the proposals.
